The Trail

The Trail is a portable fantasy tabletop RPG that you can run anywhere. You can play it while standing in line, hanging out with friends, or at a table with dice.

Features:

  1. Play anywhere: The game is so rules-light that you can play it in a car, while hiking, or pretty much anywhere, without the need for any materials or equipment. You don't even need dice to play, although there's also a tabletop-based variant that uses dice.
  2. Explore a dangerous wilderness: In many fantasy games, PCs spend very little time actually experiencing their fantasy world, instead spending the vast majority of their time in a town or a specific location fighting monsters. In The Trail, wilderness exploration is part of the game, where the threats that the PCs face are actually out there in the wilderness.
  3. Gain magic and abilities through adventuring: In this world, magic can only be cast through artifacts (such as rings and amulets), which you can get by defeating monsters. Do you want to cast the fireball spell? Go to the abandoned temple of the fire god and defeat the elemental that guards it.

Characters are made up of the following elements:

  1. Two attributes, Body and Mind. This makes different characters distinct – you can still have a brainy character or a brawny character – without having to remember a bunch of different stats.
  2. A Role, which is similar to a D&D class while specifying your specific function in combat. Are you a melee Warrior or a ranged Archer? A stealthy Scout or a magically skilled Wizard?
  3. An Instinct, which describes how you go about things.
  4. In the tabletop version, you also have a Background, which represents training in a particular discipline such as druidic arts or monastic focus.
  5. A set of magic artifacts that provide special abilities, like turning invisible or temporarily boosting your stats.
